Temperatures in Perth are set to nudge 40 degrees Celsius in the lead up to Christmas but an eleventh-hour reprieve will see it cool down to a more pleasant 31C on Christmas Day.
A trough will drag hot air down the west coast during the week before moving inland on Christmas Eve, allowing sea breezes to bring a mild reprieve on Friday.
Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Senior Forecaster Steph Bond said: ’On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we’ll have hot east to north-easterly winds but by Friday we’ll start the day off in more of an onshore flow.’
’Then it will get to a nice top of 31 degrees.’
However areas inland from the West Coast won’t be as lucky, soaring above 40C in the lead up to and on Christmas Day. Perth Forecast

Meanwhile the north of the state is preparing for a deluge over the weekend with a tropical low set to bring up to half a metre of rain and gusty storms to northern parts of the Kimberley.
The low currently lies within the monsoon trough near Darwin and is expected to move towards the Kimberley during the weekend.
The BOM has warned that up to 500 millimeters of rain is possible in some areas, a once in a five to 10 year event, which is likely to trigger ’widespread and dangerous’ flooding.

While the low will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, especially on Sunday and Monday, it is unlikely to have enough time over water to intensify into a cyclone before moving inland.
’The chance of it moving offshore later in the week is also fairly low,’ Ms Bond said.

A minimum of 25C and a maximum of 34C is forecast for Broome with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.
Kununurra is set for a minimum of 23C and a maximum of 35 C and may also experience showers and storms.
